A heaping big "Thanks!" to everyone for all the great input and instructions. I went ahead and pulled the mirrors off tonight, cleaned them well, filed the inner ball joints a bit, tightened, and re-mounted. OK, so I only re-mounted the driver's side mirror. Despite the numerous warnings, I tightened a bit too much on the passenger-side mirror so I can now say from experience that these babies are not indestructible. I don't think I used any more torque than I had on the driver's side, but I sure busted the nut clean off. So I get to check out the parts dept. of a local VW dealer on my lunch break tomorrow... Thanks again to all for the many helpful responses. This has got to be one of the most active and helpful lists I've ever seen. Very nice thing going on here and I'm glad to be part of it!
