If you will excuse the toilet humor, it means "personal mail". That means you don't send to th entire list.

Since you are on AOL, the easiest way to explain it would be <click> "reply all" to respond to your sender (that can be the ENTIRE list). Or <click> "reply". That will ensure it goes only to the specific author.
