I sell them and I have also installed one. It was pretty simple. The tank is actually longer than the stock one by about a foot. You need to take a sawzall and cut away the rear mount for the gas tank. The new tank comes with a new rear mount that bolts in place and two new longer straps to hold the tank in place. You then have to move your pump and filter back about a foot (not a big deal)and remount them. That is pretty much all there is to it. Takes about an hour and a half longer than putting back a stock tank. My customer has had this installed for almost two years. He loves it. He takes long trips in Canada in the summer and just wanted the extra range. As Chris said we were originally going to mount it in his '80 Westy but it interfered with the centrally mounted gas heater. It would work on an air cooled if you didn't have one of these, or on any 2wd Vanagon. The tank is made in Germany and the quality level is on the same level with a new tank from the dealer (they are really strict about parts like this in Germany. In getting TUV approval the part has to be really made well unlike the aftermarket "Made in Taiwan" gas tanks.) If you wanted one of these it would be a special order. Give me a call.

Volkers, I have an '86 Westy Wolfsburg. Has anyone installed the Winkler 22.5 gal fuel tank in place of the 16 gal stock tank and can you offer any tips?

Also, has anyone ciphered what effect the weight of 6.5 extra gallons has on fuel mileage?

thanks Dan Hall '86 Westy Wolfsburg "Das Boot"
