Subject:      Driving with the 02 sensor unconnected

Just wondering how bad it is to drive around with the 02 sensor disconnected. Is it bad for the system or is it mainly a pollution control device. Disconnecting the 02 sensor at the green wire connector is the only way I can seem to drive for more than 5 minutes in the rain without the van shutting down.
