Carbon in the combustion chamber would indicate faulty fuel/air mixture or impurities in the gas. This may be related to your blowing out problem - if the flues don't seal properly to provide equal airflow, then the flame will go out while driving. I would imagine that this could cause problems with the combustion mixture while stationary as well.

I have heard stories of people sealing the mating surfaces of the flue/vents to the body with a heat-resistant RTV-type compound and having success with the blowing-out problem. Just make sure you do it so that you can remove it again when you need to! :"-)
