Sounds like an ignition problem, or perhaps fuel injectors.



Change your plugs, cap, and rotor.

Check all FI grounds on the motor. Make sure your battery leads are
tight.

Run a bottle of Chevron TechronR Ultra fuel injector cleaner through the
tank. Run a second bottle if no effects.

Check your compression. Should be in the 100-130 range, 120 is about
right, and no more that about 20 psi difference between cylinders; 0
difference is best.

I am new to this list, but have been driving volkswagon busses for 15
years. I have a 1980 vanagon that has been very reliable and runs great
at 0-65 on flat ground. Any incline is a problem though. I can run 70 on
flat interstate, but the slightest incline will slow it to 50-60 mph.
Occasionally it seems to get a boost of full power for a second or two.
Every once in a blue moon it also has a 1 or 2 second burst of
"coughing".  I am thinking of buying a rebuilt air flow meter from the
Bus Depot, but am open for suggestions before I spend that money. If you
have any, I will try them. Thanks, Pockets
