Not true. I don't know where this idea started but the Vanagon lug bolt does not fit the spare carrier hole.

The Vanagon lug bolt threaded portion is M14 (14mm). The Vanagon spare bolt threaded portion is M12 (12mm).

Both do have a 19mm head so the same wrench can be used.

Yes, I did try, just now in both a 1983 and 1986 Vanagon. A M12 Mercedes lug bolt fit but it has a 17mm head.
