Okay.  I may have been wrong about the M10 item but I know I've got the
threading thing right.  You'll need to go to a good hardware store to
get exactly what you need.  There seemed to be three types of threads on
metric bolts that I found:  Standard, Fine, and Extra-Fine.  It's the
fine thread that you need.  I looked in about 4 different stores
(including a couple LAPS) before I found the right one.  I ran back and
forth between the tower of bolts and my van until I pinpointed the exact
bolt.  Then I forget the washer and lockwasher.  So, it's a M12 fine
thread bolt.  I'd grab one 1.5" to 2" long.  Maybe even grab a spare.  I
did.

Not true. I don't know where this idea started but the Vanagon lug bolt
does not fit the spare carrier hole.

The Vanagon lug bolt threaded portion is M14 (14mm).
The Vanagon spare bolt threaded portion is M12 (12mm).

Both do have a 19mm head so the same wrench can be used.

Yes, I did try, just now in both a 1983 and 1986 Vanagon. A M12 Mercedes
lug bolt fit but it has a 17mm head.
