The recent spate of postings regarding the true cost of making a Pzwo bumper prompts me to put in a good word for scrap/metal recycling yards.

Examples of recent useful finds (prices in Canadian dollars):

(in small local yard): 1/4" aluminium plate, perforated with 3/16" holes. Cut-offs ( 2' X 4') from some large job. Very similar to the perf plate described in the plans for skid plates etc on the VW bulletin dealing with travelling in difficult conditions. Cost $1/lb. (approx. $20 for 2'X4' piece)

stainless beer kegs - home brewers know the usefulness of these (make into kettles etc). Cost $0.75/lb. (approx. $20)

Misc. stainless rod, nuts and bolts, angle etc. Hundreds of uses. Again $0.75/lb.

At big yard downtown, interesting section under the command of "Stan, the non-ferrous man":

Parts from what looked like a dairy bottling machine - high spec stainless tubing (1.75" diameter), lots of clamps (suitable for muffler hanging). Price for stainless higher here - $1.50/lb.

2.5" stainless tubing, bent and straight. Looked like cast-offs from truck exhaust fabrication. $1.50/lb.

2.5" stainless perforated tubing, 4' long,- god knows what its from, will use in my muffler experiment.

Lots of other stainless bits and pieces, maybe enough to make a stainless bumper (trick is finding someone to bend it correctly).

Stan (the list one) is right about clothes to wear, and wear gloves and boots. Also bring cash, better deal that way.
