This can be fixed with the engine still in the car. Can't be done on type 1s because there is no room, but plenty with a Vanagon. You will need a heli-coil or keen-sert or whatever other flavor of saver you want to use. Make sure the piston is down. Drill the hole. Tap it. Use a blow with an extension tip - extend it into the chamber and blow out all of the chips. (VERY CRITICAL) Install heli-coil, keen-sert, whatever you use. Install new plug.
