Assuming you trusted the advice of that VW mechanic 15 years ago, and I assume you did. You are still well within the 1 litre per 1KM. Which is, of course, 625 miles or so. A litre is also bigger than a quart. Sleep tight, drive more.

My 1.9, for comparisons sake, uses less than a quart every 2000 miles.
