Hi Stan and other Air-cooled experts,

I bought a pristine '89 Westy about a year ago and absolutely love it. My girlfriend and I put about 20k km on it on a 2 month trip immediately after we bought it without any mechanical difficulties - since then, a clutch job, a coolant tank and a couple smaller repairs.

Last month my parents came to Vancouver for a visit and borrowed the Westy for a week to tour around Vancouver Island. They've been looking at conversion vans and small RVs but hadn’t considered a Westy because where they live, southern Ontario, they use lots of salt on the roads in the winter and there aren’t many Westy survivors. Anyway, they loved my van and my Dad was really interested in learning about the 80-83 Westies. He's always worked on his own cars, trucks, tractors, boats, etc, so he really liked the idea of the simplicity of the air-cooled Vanagon Westys.

All that said, I've been watching the classified ads here in Vancouver and this week I see two 1980 Westys that I am planning to go look at. Other than driving a buddy's '78 Westy a few times, I have no experience with the air-cooled vans. What should I be looking for on these things??

~Eric~ '89 Westy Vancouver, BC
