I would agree with Steve on this one. I have been using the Vag-Com tool for about two years and it is excellent. I was using it during the beta version and the guy that wrote the program and sells the tool is a really nice VW enthusiast. His name is Uwe Ross and originally this tool didn't have the features that it needed in order to be used with the Tiico conversion (setting CO, etc.) I spoke to him about this and within a couple of days he had written some new code to allow the tool to be used for the Tiico. This was a beta but it worked very well. I then gave him ideas as he went along for things that I liked or didn't like about the tool. He listened and the tool that is available now is great. Well worth the $200 for the software and cables. If you have to go to the dealer even just a couple of times to get them to check an engine code or reset your computer after your battery is disconnected this thing will pay for itself (I am talking about newer Jettas/Golfs, or Tiico Vanagons). Plus the coolness factor whenever a friend comes over and you can check his ECU for trouble codes is great (I have checked my sister's 98 Golf and my buddy's 99 Jetta). I normally use this tool for the Tiico conversion. Just FYI.

It was posted that VAG-COM was only in beta version, and suggested that it should not be purchased. That is incorrect. An alpha version has been released. I use the system, and have for nearly 2 years. It works VERY well (even the beta versions), accessing everything on OBDII equipped VW products. For those who don't know, it is software and an interconnect cable allowing the user to access and perform any functions the dealer VAG 1551 tester will do. I use it both to add keys into the system on 2000 and newer VW/Audi, and to troubleshoot and monitor my 2000 New Beetle. In short, don't try to rate a product that you have no first hand experience on. Steve Sandlin '84 Wolfsburg Westy '79 Kombi '00 New Beetle
