Subject: Rear anti-roll bar installed!
Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii

Gary, I read your post to the list about installing a used front sway bar onto the rear of your van with interest. However I don't have the skills to fabricate the "heavy steel carriers to attach the a/r bar pivots to the inner control arm mounts" or to shorten the "end links from the bar to the control arms" as you described. I'll need to hire someone to fabricate this mounting hardware. Any chance you could share plans or drawings? I suspect there are also others on the list who would also be interested in this information. Tom LaLanne '86 Subie Westy

A month or more back I saw a post saying that the rear anti-roll bar as installed on ambulance and other heavy models was the same part number as the front bar on our '88. I got a front bar with all hardware from a dismantler for $75 with the idea of installing in the rear. I fabricated heavy steel "carriers" to attach the a/r bar pivots to the inner control arm mounts, shortened the end links from the bar to the control arms, drilled holes in the control arms to attach the links and ta-da, looks like the factory would have done it.

Our '88 has shortened stiffened springs, Konis set to about half firm, and "performance" alignment settings (less toe-in more negative camber). Wow! I only took a 2 mile test drive late last nite, but this thing is going to be fun! So far there seems to be no tendancy to break the rear end loose as a result of too much roll stiffness at the rear, and it hasn't tried to lift or spin the inside rear wheel. You sure can feel the rear now doing it's share of the work in developing cornering force.

I'm going to go take the long way to work... more as it develops.

Gary
