Subject: Interesting oil leak - HELP!

Brian,

Most likely culprit is the oil pressure sending unit just left (drivers side) of center, behind the crank pulley. That's where I'd start looking first. Seen it more than once myself.

On my way up here, my van developed an interesting oil leak. I first noticed it when we were gassing up. The rear hatch and bumper were coated with a mist of oil. When I looked underneath, I saw a couple (5-7) drops on the ground. It appears to be coming from behind the main pulley. I immediately checked the oil level. It was fine, still at the max mark. > > About 250 miles later, when I checked it again, we had lost about 1/2 a quart. I topped it off and went on. I had to do this once more before we reached Maine, a total of 1500 miles of driving. > > Now that we are driving through the hills, it appears that the van is losing oil at a faster rate. I hasn't gotten dangeerous yet since I have been very diligent about checking the level every time we stop. > > The question is: As best I can tell, it's the seal behind the main pulley that is leaking. Is this something that is replacable without tearing the engine apart? Does it require any special tools? Does anyone know of a place in northern Aroostook county that might carry the seal? > > Thanks for the assist... > > -- > Brian > '85 Vanagon 7-passenger GL > __________________________________ __ > /____ ______ ____== ___________\ ___ > // | | | | \== \ \\ _____ > // | | | | \== \ \\ > //______| |______| |______\== \__________\|______ > | - | > | | | @ |______ > _[ ____ __ _ [|][WVVW][|]_ > |__] // \\ / \ |___|____________| > `---/| () |\--------|| () |---/=)________)=o{}=={ }=={ } > _________\__//_\__//____ \__//__\__//____________ > > __________________________________________________________________ > Your favorite stores, helpful shopping tools and great gift ideas.
