Subject: Charcoal Filter?

I just learned that my vanagon has a "charcoal filter valve." Can someone enlighten me as to the purpose of this device?

I'm also vainly searching thru the Bentley for something that will tell me what the connector is for that attaches to the bracket holding the metal coolant pipe that runs transversely across the top of the engine. The connector is attached to the bracket on the passenger side and the wires run into the same bundle as the big wire from the alternator.

Anyone know where I can find illustrations that point to each component and tell you what it is? Bentley's ok if you know, for example, that a connector is part of the fuel injection system. Put if you suspect it leads to a charcoal filter valve, I find myself mystified!

TIA.
