The most common cause of rich running on the 1.9 motor is caused by the temp-2 sender which is the two-wire sender located next to the water pump. Most often, the plug is corroded and the correct resistance is not being read by the ECU. First thing to try is to remove the connector and clean the contacts with contact cleaner and see if it fixes the problem. Also test the resistance of the the sender while the engine is hot and compare the reading with what is shown in the Bentley book. If it is not correct, replace the sender.

I am getting about 10-12 MPG on the Hwy with my '83 1.9L watercooled FI Vanagon, less in town. The exhaust smells extremely rich. Engine runs OK. Timing seems to be correct, though I have no notch on my pulleys and used a ^ shaped mark on the flywheel and centered it in the timing hole. Replaced the O2 sensor, plugs, oil and air filter. Vacuum lines appear properly routed and suspect one relaced. Other rubber air lines seem to be OK.

Suggestion as to what to be looking for will be greatly appreciated--and i'll takle anyone who helps me figure this out for a Sunday drive:)
