I have indeed tried ABS on snow. Gravel as well. Many of my personal vehicles are so equipped. Doesn't do so well in gravel.

I was simply making a point that it was really not that critical to worry about ABS is US Vanagons since they were not made readily available here anyway. Why exasperate yourself about a decision that VW management made decades ago?

As for your friend's Westy w/ ABS, have you considered the possibility that was not a true US spec vehicle? I have a couple of Euro spec vehicles which appear US spec which actualy never has been.
