Last year, almost exactly a year ago, I posted my '91 Carat's smog test results after it had a complete tune-up. I was a bit amazed at the results.

Today (rather tardily :-() I did a tune-up on my '93 Mercury Villager, and rushed to get a smog certificate before the late registration penalty went up another bunch of buckazoids.

The Villager is about to roll over to 130K miles within the next 100 miles or so...I'm totally amazed at the numbers, especially in comparison with a two years older Vanagon.

Vanagon runs cleaner at 2500 and idles cleaner (lower HC) but emits more carbon monoxide.

Here are the numbers C = '91 Carat, V = '93 Mercury VillagerLS):

NOTE: Neither vehicle had a fresh O2 sensor when tested. Oh, yeah...the Carat had 109K miles on it when tested .

I wonder what would happen if they sniffed the exhaust at our typical ~70mph freeway speed for the Carat? The Villager runs about 2500rpm in overdrive at 70mph.
