Welcome to the world of Farm Land Mechanics Club. Be grateful that you weren't dealing with the salt rotted fasteners they have on the East Coast. I've heard that some people have had to drill the heads off. This is old equipment we've got here. There aren't many Westy /Vanagon repairs that are beyond your minor skills so just jump right in there and you'll be helping new Vanagon and Westy owners soon with their questions.
