Subject: 86' Westfalia Ignition Timing... HELP!
Content-Type: text/plain; charset="US-ASCII"

Hello, I'm new to the list and I've combed the archives for info. I have a 1986 Westy. 179,000 new clutch and going strong. The mechanic that did the clutch for me adjusted the timimg by ear, and ever since then, the it stalls out several times while warming up. I took it to a different mechanic as the other is 100 miles from where I live. He put an induction light on it and screwed it up royally. He had to set it by ear too. It runs smoothly, but has way less low end power. I'm getting a little frustrated. I'd appreciate some instruction on how to properly set the timing. Do I need to take it to VW to have it hooked up to all their equiptment? OR, can I just use a regular cheapy light on it? I do have the Bentley but have more questions than answers... It says I need to hook up to the distributor cap and the coil I think... Is this true? Will an induction light work? Also I'd like to make sure I know what degree to set it at, and make sure I know where cylinder # 1 is.

I really appreciate any advice you can give!

Thanks!
