<snip> I'm running a non standard 27X8.5-14 I think they inflated them to VW spec when they put them on, but I'm probably going to the Mfr spec since I feel the Mfr just might know more about their tires then Deutsch engineers from 20 years ago. <snip>

The manufacturer knows the maximum pressure the tire is designed to handle, and how heavy a load it can handle at the pressure.

They do not know how much your vehicle weighs, or what the suspension is like.

There have been several recent posts talking about how to adjust tire pressure to your vehicle, so you might take a look at those.

The short version is - if you are running a recommended size, then go with the car manufacturer recommended pressure and adjust a bit up and down until you get decent handling. Don't ever go over the tire's max pressure.

With heavier-duty or non-standard sizes, you have to experiment a bit more. Look at how much your vehicle weighs in relation to the max capacity of the tire.

Running them at max pressure all the time might be necessary, but for heavier duty tires, they might well be too stiff for good handling. Remember that VW recommends only 40 psi on 205R/14 LR 97 tires. They can handle ~1650 lbs at max pressure, but don't need that much pressure on the Vanagon.

Hope they work out well for you.
