The 2wd Vanagons have a somewhat different front suspension than Syncros do. Syncros have more clearance between the inward side of the tire and the upper ball joint. Audi 5000 turbo rims have an offset of ET45 and this puts the tires closer in than stock rims. On 2wd Vanagons the wider 215/75/15 tires will rub drastically on the ball joint area using Audi rims but on a Syncro they will clear just fine.

Also 2wd Vanagons have a large grease cap on the front hubs and the center holes of the Audi rims must be bored out quite a lot to clear these. Then spacers must be used to mount the rims farther to the outside and longer lug bolts are needed.

They can be used on 2wd Vanagons if the machining is done and longer lug bolts are used with 9/16" spacers.

Mark.
