Brent,
I just did my Westy door's--and it was easy but not cheap----
i had bought this roll of Dynamat last year for my 85 and just never got
around to the job-----
I was installing new front speakers in the doors of my Westy--and this
was the time to be doing this job---
I think a roll of this stuff was about $75.00, and is basically thick
tar paper with sticky on the back of it---
You can't in any way shape or form get this stuff into the doors in one
piece---it has to be installed in sections, butting them up to each
other---to get the interior door panel covered---
I didn't have the roller they all say to use--because it would almost be
impossible in the front door---
I heated the stuff up with my heat gun, as I was sticking it on, and
worked it smooth with my hands sometimes contorting them to get to the
corner's--it wasn't a picnic---
The rest of the Van is pretty simple, especially the side door ,and the
rear hatch---because it is more open---then the roller would work
fine--but I still would recommend the heat gun to smooth it all out---
Go to Best Buy--they have all kinds of this stuff--and a lot cheaper
than I got mine for---
I also as long as I was there blew in some Waxoyl and loaded the bottom
of the doors as well as in the corners real good---then gave the sound
deadeing material a good coat of it too---
The doors when they close sound like a Benz-----CLUNK !!!
I think the under padding that your talking about is a composition foam
product----that is used for underlayment of carpeting---it would be a
good selection under the rugs, for insulation, and sound deadening--but
it will attract and hold moisture---
Have fun---
Terry

OK - I am pulling the door panels off next weekend to re-wire my windows
and side mirrors, and while at it I plan to install some sound deadening
materials. I have spent hours poring over the archives on the subject,
as well as poring over the manufacturers' web sites, and I am TOTALLY
confused. Why do these companies have to make a dozen products each that
all sound like they do the same thing? Grrr....
Can anyone provide definitive advice on which of these products to use
in the door panels, and why:
B-Quiet Extreme
B-Quiet Lite
Brown Bread
Dynamat
B-Quiet Vcomp
B-Quiet Lcomp
For the life of me, I cannot make sense of it all - they all sound the
same (no pun intended). Also, is there one of the products that will
replace the "mat" that is installed under the carpeting in a GL Vanagon?
(It looks to be made of a mixture of felt and cork).
Thanks in advance,
Brent Christensen
