Todd,

Where there is smoke there is fire---- Ahhhh--I mean where there is fluid there is a leak--

If that rubber boot is wet,the cylinder is cooked---

Change it--

The only way to minimize fluid lose is to work fast---

But think of this---

When was the last time you have changed your brake fluid?

This may be a blessing in disguise---

Let that fluid fly in the process and you'll be actually doing your Van a big favor, by getting rid of some of that old snotty, moisture laden fluid--

After you have the cylinder changed, fill up the master cylinder with fluid, and just crack open the bleeder and let it drain , until the fluid runs clear----(no bubbles)---

Do this on each bleeder, until all the fluid is clear.

Be sure to watch the master so it keeps full of fluid, as your doing this.( don't allow it to run dry, as your bleeding the cyliners and front calipers)

Now you have all fresh clean fluid, and you'll be good to go for another 10 years--or until the other cylinder starts leaking--:>)

Have fun---

Terry

In you are changing the shoes on the rear brakes, and you notice fluid seeping from the rubber boot on the wheel cylinder, is it time for a new cylinder? I was hoping that perhaps the piston just went out too far since there is no pad holding it in... but wanted to know for sure. Is there a trick to changing the cylinders to minimize brake fluid loss?
