Hi John,

A lot of times when I camp here in Colorado, I'll go to private land and drive up, knock on a door, and ask if I can camp on their land. Most people are very obliging and ask only that you not spread word-of-mouth about their places. Also, a lot of the camp grounds allow for either tent or car camping, and getting a car camp stall that's big enough (most are) to put your tent up is key. Those are the kinds of spots where the side tent really worked out for me, as well as tailgating in dusty gravel parking lots before concerts.

I like the way the tent gives you so much more space--if you're doing an extended camping trip, the tent is indispensable as a spot to put coolers and all of that and to keep stuff out of the way. I have a GL with the big fold-down bed, and once you have your sleeping area folded down, there's not much room in the vanagon for anything else. Plus, when it rains, you have all that room to relax and listen and stay dry.

I really liked the tent that Ron posted about yesterday from Bus Depot. Decent price and it certainly looks big enough.

I was wondering how many of you that camp have had success finding places where you can use a tent attached to the van? Most real campgrounds don't seem to qualify, and I have trouble finding places that allow dispersed camping.

Can't say I have camped with the van a hundred times, but I have been around the interemountain west and don't seem to find that many places where an attached tent is useful. I would like to know if anyone can enlighten me on your experiences. I don't figure anyone will give away that secret spot, but since I go it alone, I am sure I am missing a lot. Anyone care to add to the knowledge base? :-)

Thanks,

John WVC, UT
