Hey, could be worse, could be an auto trans (shudder).

Why not just lose the drive belt? OK I may be missing something here, and any other items on the same belt would still need to be driven. Quick solution, and if you ever decided that you (or another driver) needed power steering, no drama to hook it up again. Women love power steering. (Gratuitous generalisation from personal experience)
