I am new to the list, but sorry to see you go. I also have a 74 2.0 914. And O how wonderful she is. If you can't be driving a 914 you might as well be diving a giant brick.

Ho to the list... This is an update to my 1984 head gasket/overheating saga... After nearly two months of having this bus sit in my yard due to an over heating problem and after spending several hundred dollars trying to track down the problem, plus many days under and over this beast I finally got it to cool down when running.. sounds good? yeah, it did until I went to recheck all the head bolts and rocker arms bolts and found coolant in the valve cover !!! Heart broken I replaced the cover, pushed the van down into my lower parking area and called my local VW repair guy. My words were simple... I AM DONE!!! My bus is for sale as of now! I will never own another water boxer, EVER! I am going back to my old favorites .. AIR COOLED.... I should of listened to my gut and all the common complaints I have received in this list about the head problems associated with this vehicle... Sometimes it does pay to listen... hehehe.. So, I am back to driving my Porsche 914, with it's beautiful 2.0 engine and sleek design.. Plus, it's air cooled!!! I will put my 71 van back on the road now that the new beams are available..

What this all means is I am leaving the vanagon list.... I wanted to thank all of you for your attention to all my problems and listening and offering advice.. you people are the best! I am going to go find a Porsche list serve to get involved with.. hehe..

Thank you and have fun with your head stuff and all the other myriad of problems associated with what I am now convinced is VW's worst design....

Peace to you and yours! See you on the road... If you see my little black 74 Porsche 914 cruising by.. wave!!!

Soft winds...

Tim
