Andy,

seems to be a common failure. There is a spring inside the lock body that holds the button in the up and down position (kind of an "over the centre" effect). This spring is pretty well impossible to replace. My solution was to unscrew the button and slip a small section of rubber hose over the threaded boss and screw the button back in. This provides enough friction to hold the button in position.
