In you are changing the shoes on the rear brakes, and you notice fluid
seeping from the rubber boot on the wheel cylinder,
is it time for a new cylinder?  I was hoping that perhaps the piston
just went out too far since there is no pad holding it in...
but wanted to know for sure.

Is there a trick to changing the cylinders to minimize brake fluid loss?
