Greetings listmembers,

I have lurked about the archives for a number of years and learned a great many things about Vanagons. It's time I showed my face and officially thank everyone for their postings. I have learned alot without really getting my hands dirty save for the keyboard.

I used to have a 1968 VW bus but had to sell it years ago. I regretted selling it the moment I handed over the key. A few years later I decided to look into getting a Vanagon. I found the archives on the web and did alot of homework before taking the plunge. I bought a 1991 Vanagon Carat and soon discovered the joys and heartache of owning this rig. I have already had the heads replaced and have actually enjoyed years of trouble free running until recently.

After another search of the archive it seems that my rig is exhibiting the signs of either a) a bad O2 sensor or b) a bad coolant temp sensor. It started right up and ran smoothly for a quick 5 minute run to the store. After getting back in and heading down the road it began sputtering, lagging and surging. At the stoplight the idle dropped until it almost stalled. I did the brake/gas pedal routine to keep it running until I could get off onto a side street. The idle was erratic and it would cough and sputter for a few seconds then surge back to life and off I went down the street. I managed to get it home where it now sits awaiting my attention.

My question: What is the best way to tell the difference in symptoms between an O2 sensor and a coolant temp sensor? From what I have read in the archives, the symptoms seem similar. I figure I can replace the O2 sensor (with my limited knowledge and tools) but I am wary of doing the coolant temp sensor. Before I start throwing parts (and $$) at it willy-nilly, can anyone help me narrow down what might be giving me trouble?

Also, does anyone live in the Seattle area that would recommend a shop/mechanic? Strange as it sounds, I have had a dealer do most of the work on my beast and have been happy with them but parts and labor costs can add up...

Thanks again for your help!!
