Well, since nobody else has replied yet, I'll mention my experience. I've used my side tent in a number of public camgrounds (county/state/federal, in various states), as well as some small privately-owned ones, and never had a problem. I imagine that the rules (or interpretation of the rules; is it considered a freestanding tent, or an extension of the vehicle like an awning on the side of an RV?) could vary by county, state, or even the particular park ranger. But personally I have never been hassled or even questioned about using my side tent anywhere I've gone, except for a couple of rangers who were simply curious about what it was. I haven't tried the big commercial campgrounds (i.e. KOA), as I tend to avoid them.
