Some people say that you get better low beam performance if you drive the lamps through a relay, triggered by the headlight switch. Apparently, the original switch causes a significant voltage drop, which supposedly means that your headlights are dimmer than they need be. Well, if your headlight switch gets hot, that would be true. The heat is power that should be going to your lamps. If you had the round headlights, I'd suggest that you switch to H4 lamps - much better illumination all round. > Just bought a 1990 Carat after a long search. After three weeks of enjoyable daily driving have a few questions: > > 1. Is there an easy way to improve the low beams? The high beams are teriffic but the low beams are as bad as the low beams on my stock '74 bug! Checked the aiming and it's OK. Discovered a Hella conversion is avaialble on the NET but for hundreds of dollars. Is there a reasonable solution? > > 2. Is there an easy way to mount fog lamps above the bumper? My Vanagon has the grey plastic bumpers but the clearance from the metal to the top of the plastic bumper it too much for me to just simply mount the lamps directly to the metal bumper frame. > > 3.
