Stan what a great and well written story. I really enjoyed reading it. It makes me wonder why you so often deride the wasserboxer when you've just given more than sufficient proof that (as most of us know) the air-cooled VW engine can be equally problematic. I have driven air-cooled VW's my entire life and I love them, but I would not recommend them to anyone who doesn't want to get there hands dirty. You also seem like the type who could change head gaskets on a wasserboxer with no trouble (probably be done by lunch time), and this may not even be necessary on a well maintained late model. So why can't you see the pros and cons of both types? As with most people I think it has to do with what you know and feel most comfortable with.
