Hi Ben and all,
I don't know much about all of this stuff, but would be willing to
participate. A quick question though, for which I'm sure there's a quick
answer:
Why couldn't Vanagon.com be changed and upgraded to include all of these
sections and ideas?

www.vwvans.com
Ed DeBolt (from the list) made me a proposition about using this official
domain name, he owns the www.vwvans.com but he is the only one paying for
it.
(((((((Updade from today the 17 Of june from Ed:
I think I could serve up the vwvans.com site for free. turns out we have a
unix server doing light duty. Its just doing back up DNS service.. might
have to move it after a year or so if the site is high high traffic. Also I
have already paid for the domain for 2 yrs so
would be no cost for at least a year))))
I (Ben) won't be able to keep forever my personal page at the same place,
the main page is on a personal page server with my Cable connection
company, and they suck lately.
I also bought a functioning 1.9L for $300 CAD (I should pick this one up
this week), my winter project (if I can wait) will be to disassemble this
engine and rebuilt this one. I will take at least 50-100 pictures of the
procedure and would do a big section on that.
Well, what I mean is those who would consider sharing the fee and having a
official web side that everybody here could participate. To participate you
only need "Word 97, 2000" or any other kind of text tool and some photo
software tool (optional, picture could be sent by mail). I and/or others
would gladly do the HTML conversion.
I am sure that many here could help maintaining the web site also.
There would not be any Forum or mailing list of course; the vanagon mailing
list server would be the official one. The web site would be a completion
of the vanagon mailing list server. I know, there is Vanagon.com,
westfalia.org, but I feel that a more lively and often updated web site
would be nice.
It's not that I don't have the web-space to host more stuff but its getting
scattered on different server.
It would be nice to accommodate many different web pages under one official
web name from many people, one official guy would gather all info and only
one person would upload the new update, many webmaster(or not so webmaster)
could participate.
We need some kind of membership, just so we can manage the $$$ of it.
All members would be officially listed on the site with all links to their
official personal web page (if needed).
Update: we don't really need money for now but we would need help and
suggestion.
The cost:
Yearly price of $99 USD would provide for 300 mgs (a lot more than we need
for now) of storage and 20 gigs or transfer a month.
If the site really takes off then we could acquire the hardware and serve
it off Ed's network or perhaps someone elses net.
Even at $200 per year, it's $16 per month, divided by 20 guys it's less
than 1$ each per month.
Here how I see the structure of this site.
-Avery good "Flash Animation intro" (a guy on the road having some cooling
problem) he he he.
-A very nice, comprehensive, colorful, and cute main page reflecting the
Vanagon owners.
-Covering of all engine, Air and wasser 1.9L & 2.1L.
-Technical engine related section, divided by theme. Covering all main
subjects
-Technical Body related section, divided by theme. Covering all main
subjects
-Body Electrical section, divided by theme. Covering all main subjects
-Engine Electrical section, divided by theme. Covering all main subjects
-Camper section including modification.
-General info section
-fun section
-a private section for paying member with password (money stuff)
-FAQ section (the biggest one ever)
-A very big link section to official VW site, various parts dealers and so
on (USA, Canada, Mexico, international)
-link section to personal pages
-link section to travel destination ? campground (USA, Canada, Mexico,
international)
-Link section to Mechanics Listing, (USA, Canada, Mexico, international)
These are only suggestions; by all mean I don't want to be the only one in
that project. If at least 20/30 person (ladies and gentlemen) have the will
to do a project like that, I am in at 100% with my $2/5 a month.
Any suggestion or comment!
Any of you who want to participate ($ or time) please p-mail me and I will
compile all name and details. For all other suggestion, please put them on
this thread, keep this thread alive. I would suggest a minimum $2 per
month, when we reach the amount per year (about $100 USD) we would stop
demanding money. We can also form an official club with one treasurer. All
that is too help the VW community. If you have any comment on how and by
who the money should be manage, do so.
Like mentioned above, the www.vwvans.com is fully paid by Ed, he can also
host the name for a year or more but I fell that he shouldn't be the only
one to pay for that!!!
I will give the work I done so far to this community, and that, for ever.
Can some of you guys do the same (Give some of your time, knowledge,
advise, info and so on). We could create a hotmail e-mail for that purpose.
So any member can see all info coming in, or something like that.
Basically these are only suggestions, do you have some?
We won't do that only by our selves. If we have 10-20 replies under this
thread, everything is possible.
