No, you don't need to remove the steering column to remove the dash, just the two bolts holding it to the bottom of the dash. Removing the steering wheel isn't necessary either, but makes getting the dash out much easier.

Use a large pair of channel lock pliers to remove the bolts holding the steering column to the dash, no need to drill them out or replace them, unless you really want to.

You shouldn't need to pull the dash to rewire the door speakers, just drop the fuse block and remove the glove box and you can access most of the wiring.
