John sez he's hot:

John,

I went through a lot of pain and suffering, literally, while attempting to cut corners and fix the A/C in my '85 myself. I replaced the A/C compressor, twice, and eventually found an additional leak in the low-pressure hose. I had the hose made and put it in myself. I then took the Vanagon to have the system charged at a local A/C shop. I should have gone there right after I put in the compressor, since each time you open the system you have to evacuate all the air and put in the freon. All that guesswork and recharging adds up quickly - $$$. Unless you have the proper equipment, you can't do it. The guys at the shop have all the right equipment. The system is now converted to R134A and it cools fine. It still has a very small leak somewhere, but I can charge it myself.

I would take it to a reputable A/C shop and let the experts have at it, with warranty, and save yourself much sweatage in the process.

Just my 2 zloty.

Chris,

'85 Westy.
