I had the exact same question about a month ago.

After reading the archives, which reassured me that I wasn't missing something obvious, I did the following:

Open the back hatch. Unscrew the panel that surrounds the a/c intake and remove the panel. Reach around the a/c unit (long, skinny, simian-like arms are helpful) on either side to remove the speakers. They've got a retaining ring that you unscrew that holds the speaker grille that you see from the front against the wood panel.
