Subject: Coolant Level
Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1"

Dear Vanagon Owners:

Situation: Checked the coolant level on the '91 over the weekend (while all was cool), the coolant was at the Minimum Level.

Drove the '91 roughly 20 miles today; checked the coolant level again (after all was cool) and there was absolutely no coolant in the plastic container. No runs, no drips, no errors in the driveway to indicate I lost any after the 20 mile excursion. Not sure if I lost any during the short trip, BUT, no indicator lights came on to indicate an overheating problem.

This afternoon, I added approximately 1/2 quart of coolant to bring the level back to Minimum level. Will drive it again this evening to check things out.

Background: Rebuilt engine with approximately 8000 miles on it. New water pump installed in March '02.

Any insight on proper coolant levels would be most appreciated. Does one think I have a potential problem here or just one of those daily premaintenance checks. She's headed west in a few short days. I'd obviously rather deal with a problem before it she leaves.

Thanks to all and Happy Travels.

Denise '91 Westy (Tail Wgn)
