First of all, check to make sure that the heat exchangers have not rusted through and you are now smelling not only the cooking oil from the blown engine but are also getting exhaust gas mixed in. If it has been many years since the exchangers have been replaced then you may want to replace them anyway. The work involved in removing and replacing an old part in the exhaust system might justify new parts.
