This may be true for gasoline vehicles, but the original question about how
to do this was being asked because David is converting a gas Vanagon to a
diesel Vanagon. If the unleaded fuel only restrictor was in there, it
wouldn't matter whether you could pass inspection or not, because you'd
never be able to fill your gas tank - at least not without a funnel! The
diesel fuel pump nozzles at gas stations are larger in diameter then the
unleaded ones. Hence the restrictor - so you cannot put leaded or diesel
fuel into your unleaded fuel only vehicle. I don't think there would be any
reason to knock out the restrictor for a gasoline-fueled vehicle, unless
perhaps you were traveling somewhere abroad where you might encounter larger
nozzles at the pumps.

Can anyone who has a diesel Vanagon describe what their fuel filler neck
opening looks like, and preferably how it differs from the unleaded fuel
filler neck opening? Thanks very much!
