Hi Rachel,

The filler tube is a push fit into a rubber seal in the side of the tank. The seal will have stiffened over the years and can be quite difficult to remove.

I suggest that you try a penetrating oil to help free it. Apply once, leave for a few minutes and apply again. I use an aerosol (WD-40) but I'm not sure whether WD-40 is available in the US market but a silicone-based rubber/plastic lubricant would also do the trick.

You must fit new seals when replacing the filler tube or tank.

There is a very good picture of the diesel tank, filler neck etc. on pages 20.10 and 20.11 of the Bentley VW Vanagon manual, and it is also shown (albeit less clearly) in the Haynes manuals for the Vanagon with gasoline engines. I don't have easy access to a fax machine but someone else on the list might be able to fax you a copy of the relevant page(s).

Good luck!

Best regards,

Tony
