Yes. The premium you pay is based on the insurance company's
understanding of its value. If the value changes, based on your
improvements, you haven't paid the right premium, and they're not
obligated to pay for their value if damaged or totalled.

In other words, you've paid the premium to insure the basic van.
Improvements would have cost you (not significantly) more premium to
have them insured, if you had paid this.
