Hello Larry, I just removed the gas tank out of my 80 van for cleaning and such... I'm not to sure about the van.. but it might have a anti-syphoning mesh in the hose on yours. So, the hose basically binds up before hitting gas.. Otherwise the hose might be going in, skipping off the bottom and ponting sky high. From my van's gas tank the best way, was to jack up the front, remove the supply hose to the fuel pump and return line. Popped open the gas cap off and let it run. Hope that might help ya some.
