Tom...I use German seals and put a thin coating of grease around it. Tapping it slowly into the bell housing with a driver (tube with a metal cap on top that put even pressure on the seal) Even if the outside buggers up a bit, the inside never has a problem. Never had a leak on one of my rebuilds from that seal...Are you sure its trans oil and not eng oil from the flywheel seal??? Have had several shops find that out the hard way. There is a bushing that is part of the bell hsg that comes loose at times that keeps some of the "splashed oil" out of the seal. When those come loose, the mainshaft gets buggered up behind the seal sealing surface and might cause the seal to fail. Mind you, I replace the seal with the bell housing off the tranny, so its easy to see if there is a problem. You can repair/reinstall the bushing/slinger if that is the case by swedging the serrated part and tapping it back into the bell hsg and secure using JB weld. If your pilot bearing is good there shouldn't be any play to cause the seal to leak, but there is some play with the trans out of the van. About 1/8" up/down play on the mainshaft for most of them is normal. Thats all I can think of..call if you still have a problem
