Tom, Just on the basics of fuel, ignition, and compression to start and engine, it seems to be an ingition fault. Have you checked that your getting voltage and suffcients amp with the ignition switch in the START position. Have you checked that the coil is getting voltage and suffcient amperage? or swapped out a coil? The only other idea I can submit is a hall sensor fault, but more of a hunch that having enough information to justify, but since You mention the gas smell, which is the injectors fire or spray gas, but they get the go ahead from the ECU once it "sees" the hall sender/distrubtor signal, so your hall sensor seems ok .
