On Cape Breton, the Cabot trail is a must see. Maybe go up the west side from Port Hastings, via Judique, Mabou, through the french speaking Cheticamp and then around to Ingonish then down towards Baddeck. Fabulous scenery, breathtaking cliff views, very friendly people. Take in the local music too. Theres nothing like it this side of the Scottish Hebrides which is where it originated mostly. Fiddlers like you would not believe!! I cant speak for the camp grounds as I always go to the Piping School at the Gaelic College at St Anns, to hone my own music. If you are close to there around midday, they have a great concert or Caelidh where the teachers perform. They are incredible. I think the pupils are mostly kids until August. Cape Breton Fiddle, Cape Breton Step dancing, Pipes, both Highland and small. The economy on Cape Breton Island does not appear to be particularly flourishing. I swear the people there only work to support their Music habit !! Baddeck itself is a neat little town and the Bras d'or lake is dazzling. The Bell museum is very interesting too. Alexander Graham Bell was a long time resident and invented the telephone there, as well as lots of other things. Oh and the local Ice cream is fantastic and cheap too. I love the place. I just wish it wasnt a 2500 mile drive for me to get there !! Enjoy !! Steve Cotsford '84 Wolfsburg Westy Columbia S C |
