Speaking of diesel, I have a 16" Syncro double cab powered with a stock but a bit tired 1.6 liter turbodiesel. I can't remember the gear ratio but it's whatever the lowest available. With very tall 16" tires, I can easily manage 70 mph on the freeway. That is until I run into anything remotely resembling a grade. Then I am at a leisurely 55mph. A big hill keeps me under 45mph. Keep in mind that this engine is very tired. Still lots of torque for offroad though.
