Subject: 87 Syncro: Clatter of death, or just annoyance?
Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; charset=US-ASCII

Hihi. This is my first time posting here, so forgive me if a problem such as this has been addressed before.

A few weeks ago I got an '87 GL Syncro in what I assume was reasonable condition, ~130K miles on the (dead) clock and some recent big repairs like the computer and head replacement documented. I've never owned a Vanagon prior to this, but I have owned other VWs and made sure to do as much research as possible before purchase.

So! That said, the bus went without a hitch across 400 miles of freeway at 75mph, pushing 22mpg according to my lead car's odometer. The engine has always "ticked" some - I assume that's just worn lifters - but as of the last couple days a scary clatter has started emanating from the engine compartment as well.

Power is unaffected, and it seems to only occur at idle or when backing off the throttle; not always even at that. As far as I can determine, it's not a loose exhaust. It sounds sorta like a bad rod bearing, though not quite as loud, and is loudest on the driver's side underneath the car. Any idea what the heck could be causing this?

Thanks in advance, ian Butler / ian@bluemoon.hplx.net
