I just had my dash apart this weekend and was thinking about installing some super bright blue LEDs into the bulb holders to see how that looked. I have fitted the LEDs into the holders but have not yet added the proper resistor in line to drop the voltage to the proper level. I'm concerned about brightness and light pattern but intend to give it a try.

I also was going to check out the VW dealer to see if maybe I can adapt the cool purple dash lights that my wife's '01 Passat to work in the Vanagon.
